Practical drivers licence testing is to once again become available in Central Hawke’s Bay.

From the 30th of November, locals will be able to sit their practical driver licence test closer to home and will have one of New Zealand’s first community driver testing officers working in the community.

The Waipukurau Community Driver Testing Officer is one of 10 who recently graduated from the first Waka Kotahi CDTO training course in early this month.

Waka Kotahi Director Regional Relationships, Linda Stewart says it is great to see practical driver testing available in Waipukurau and to welcome the new Community Driver Testing Officer.

She says a driver licence opens the door to opportunities like jobs, training, and much more, and acknowledged that some people face barriers accessing the driver licence system.

VTNZ National Technical Manager, Craig Basher, says at this stage they are committed to having a Driver Testing Officer in Waipukurau once a fortnight, but can reassess that if the demand is higher than expected.

Bookings for the tests are now open.

Two youths have been spoken to by Police after they were seen attempting to break-in to a house with a knife earlier this week.

A post on Facebook on Tuesday night said two teens in black hoodies were seen trying to break into the home on Racecourse Road in Waipukurau.

Senior Constable Andy Walker said the two 14-year-olds were trying to break into the vacant house, and Police were called.

He said an officer was able to catch-up with the pair down the road and admitted to trying to break-in to the home so they could “have a look inside”.

Mr Walker said it was a good response from the public letting Police know quickly.
