The Dannevirke community has been quick to offer clothing and assistance to a local family who lost their home in a fire on Sunday.

Fire appliances were called to a house on Waitahora Road early Sunday morning to find it fully involved.

Dannevirke Fire Chief Pete Sinclair said the family lost everything, and there was nothing saveable.

People in the community have taken to social media since then to offer assistance.

Central Hawke’s Bay’s total active COVID-19 case numbers have come down slightly since late last week.

As at yesterday there were 269 active cases, with 29 new cases reported.

Hawke’s Bay currently has 3192 active cases, and 32 people in hospital with COVID.

Tararua District currently has 278 active cases.

The MidCentral Health region, which includes Tararua, had 12 deaths from COVID-19 over the past week.

There was a fatal crash on the Napier-Taupo Road yesterday.

SH5 was closed about 11.45am, with the road fully reopening just after 6pm.

Police said three vehicles were involved in yesterday’s accident.

One person died at the scene, while two others were flown to hospital with serious injuries.
