A home in Waipukurau was extensively damaged by fire on Saturday night.

Firefighters from Waipukurau and Waipawa battled the blaze for about 45 minutes before bringing it under control.

CHB Rugby & Sports Club members, who were nearby at Central Park, were first on scene with garden hoses and to see if anyone needed assistance.

A neighbour alerted the fire service about 8.30 Saturday night.

A Fire Safety Investigator was on-site yesterday looking into the cause.

The Hawke’s Bay District Health Board says it has plans in place to ensure the safety of services for patients during today’s Public Services Association strike.

The PSA issued a strike notice to all 20 district health boards on behalf of its members for 24 hours from 11.59pm last night.

Hawke’s Bay DHB Director of Allied Health Anne McLeod said patients directly affected by the industrial action had been contacted and their appointments rescheduled, and a life preserving services agreement is in place.

The strike will affect the likes of laboratory, mental health and addictions services.

Ms McLeod said urgent laboratory work, including COVID-19 tests, will be prioritised.
