Waipawa Country United picked up the $1000 Best Supported Club prize from the recent Rural Air Work Country Rugby Day.

Clubs were judged on a number of criteria, including level of co-ordination, creativity, support to game officials, respect and sportsmanship.

Mayor Alex Walker made the announcement on Central FM on Saturday morning, and said the $1000 prize was a “fantastic twist to the day”.

Two events are planned locally as part of this week’s Road Safety Week.

Tomorrow a Car Restraint Clinic will be held at the Scout Hall Carpark in Waipukurau, offering free car seat installation.

Safety advice will also be available, and the chance to win a child’s booster seat.

The clinic will be held from 9am to midday.

Then on Thursday, Age Concern will run a Staying Safe Refresher Course.

The course will refresh older drivers knowledge on traffic rules, and is free of charge.

More than $50,000 has been raised for the Rural Support Trust from the recent 2022 Winter Olympics Event at Mt Herbert Farm.

Organiser Claire Wilson said she was still counting up the last of the fundraising money.

She thanked all of the sponsors, volunteers, participants and supporters for making the event another success.

Last year the event raised $42,000.
