The Central Hawke’s Bay Can-Do Collection for the CHB Food Bank is on tonight.

Collection bags have been delivered to homes around the district, with collectors out in all towns tonight between 6 and 7pm.

CHB Food Bank Co-ordinator, Donna Te Amo, says the Can-Do Collection is a great way to help as demand for their services has increased three-fold since last year.

Organiser Judy Strawbridge from PGG Wrightson says the collection has been running for 10 years now, and is always well supported.

She says they are looking for donations of non-perishable food items, as well as Christmas items.

Anyone who would prefer to drop there items in, or who are not covered by the collection, can drop items into PGG Wrightson in Waipukurau, local libraries, New World Waipukurau, or at Central Connect.

Judy Strawbridge says there are a number of organisations who support the Can-Do Collection, including local emergency services, Progressive Otane, Epic Ministries and the Women’s Institute.

Meanwhile local Police will be out patrolling the streets tonight after people not associated with the collection last year took food items that were left out for donation.

Senior Constable Andy Walker says there were some people who went around before the official collectors taking the items that were left out for collection.

Police were given details of two vehicles but could not identify any offenders.

Mr Walker says official collectors will be easily identifiable.
