Dannevirke café Sugar and Salt is running a fundraiser for the Prostate Cancer Foundation’s Blue September tomorrow.

The café will be selling $5 cupcakes, with 100% of the proceeds going towards the Blue September Appeal.

Café co-owner, Amanda Lloyd, said she was inspired to make the cupcakes following a friends prostate cancer diagnosis.

There are two cupcakes available – a blue velvet with a cream cheese and white chocolate icing, and a German chocolate cake cupcake decorated as the Cookie Monster.

Amanda said they have already had a number of cupcakes pre-ordered.

She said anyone wanting to pre-order, can contact the shop to do so, but there will also be cupcakes available to the public tomorrow.

A truck driver who had his foot run over near the Central Hawke’s Bay District Landfill remains in Palmerston North Hospital.

Police and Ambulance staff were called to an incident last week between two truck drivers.

Senior Constable Andy Walker said the driver had a number of surgeries to put his foot back together, and was initially discharged from hospital.

He said the man was readmitted following complications, and is now in ICU.

Mr Walker said there is still a lot of work to go in the investigation.

A special service will be held tomorrow at the Waipukurau Cemetery for a WW1 soldier on the 100th anniversary of his death.

Alfred Groves emigrated to New Zealand from the United Kingdom in 1912, and when war broke out in 1914, he enlisted in the New Zealand Army.

During his time overseas, Groves rose through the ranks, receiving a number of medals.

He also suffered bouts of Malaria.

On his return to New Zealand in 1919, he was admitted to the Pukeora Sanitorium, and was readmitted a further two times over the next two years.

He passed away on the 25th of September 1921, and was buried at Waipukurau.

Waipukurau and Districts RSA President, Janet Castell, said during the COVID lockdown in the UK a relative discovered his details, and made contact with the RSA.

Janet said Mr Groves story is a particularly sad one, and it will be a pleasure to hold tomorrows service…..VOX

The Magpies are away this weekend with a game against Wellington in the Bunnings Warehouse NPC.

The game will be played at Sky Stadium from 2.05pm Sunday.

The Big Barrel Tuis are also in action this weekend, with a game tomorrow against Taranaki at Inglewood.

It is finals day tomorrow for the Hawke’s Bay Super 8 Netball competition.

Central Sports Vet Services HB will play Hastings High School Old Girls Huias in the playoff for 3rd and 4th, with Otane Thirsty Whale and All In Elusive playing for 1st and 2nd.

Both games will be livestreamed on the Hawke’s Bay Netball Facebook page, due to no spectators being allowed due to COVID-19 restrictions.
