Otane Fire Chief John Oliver is this years recipient of the Central Hawke’s Bay Civic Award.

An audience of about 200 people gathered at the Central Hawke’s Bay’s Municipal Theatre last week for the Award’s night, where 10 individuals and two volunteer groups were recognised.

As well as being Otane’s Chief Fire Officer, John Oliver was recognised for his service to the Ōtāne Arts and Crafts Centre, the Waipawa RSA, and many other local projects and events.

CHB Mayor Alex Walker said the Award went some way to showing extreme appreciation for the long hours, incredible passion and depth of service that Mr Oliver had shown.

She said without people like John, the wheels that propel Central Hawke’s Bay forward, would not turn so smoothly,.

Last year two new categories were introduced including the Community Service Award and the Organisation of the Year Award.

The Recipients of the 2021 Outstanding Community Service Award, are:

  • Alan White (Chalky)
  • Wendy Anderson
  • Melanie King
  • Kate Luff
  • John and Brenda Blackett
  • Glen Thompson
  • Claire Wilson
  • Hans Dresel
  • Takapau Lions Club

The recipients of the 2021 Organisation of the Year Award are: 

  • The Takapau Community Health Charitable Trust
  • The Paul Hunter Centre Incorporated

Waka Kotahi New Zealand Transport Agency says current works being undertaken on State Highway 2 between Waipawa and Waipukurau are in preparation for the new shared walking and cycle path. 

Agency spokesperson Jasmine Higginson says crews are currently moving the fence back and installing a temporary fence to allow construction.

She said the temporary fencing is to cater for local farmers during lambing season.

Ms Higginson said when the shared path is complete, the fence will be reinstated on the boundary.

Work on the $2.8 million project is expected to be completed by the end of this year.

Nominations are now open for the 2021 Central Hawke’s Bay Sports Awards.

Sport Hawke’s Bay’s Nicky Heremaia is calling for those who know of an athlete, team, club, coach, official or administrator who has excelled within the last 12 months to complete a nomination form. 

Nominations must be completed online and submitted by Sunday 12th of September.

The Awards ceremony will be on Friday the 5th of November.
