Firefighters from around the region were in Waipukurau over the weekend for a training exercise.

A house which was due for demolition following a fire last year was set alight in an exercise to give new firefighters training in relation to structure fires.

Fire and Emergency NZ Area Commander, Ken Cooper, said the house was fully engulfed by flames in three minutes.

He said this highlights the importance of working smoke alarms and an escape plan.

Firefighters came from brigades including Bay View, Taradale, Nuhaka, Otane and Waipukurau.

$42,000 was raised at the 2021 Winter Olympics event in Central Hawke’s Bay.

Organiser Claire Wilson said in a Facebook post that two thirds of the profit, or $28,000, will go to Kidscan, with a focus on supporting Hawke’s Bay children living in poverty.

The remaining $14,000 will go to Dannevirke Hunt, who assisted with the event.

Claire Wilson said the organisers wanted to thank everyone for their wonderful support of the fundraiser and grassroots jumping event.
