A vehicle believed to have caused a car-crash in Waipukurau yesterday left the scene of the accident.
Emergency services were called just after midday to a two-vehicle crash on Herbert Street near the intersection of River Terrace.
Senior Constable Andy Walker said the vehicle that left the scene was a silver Nissan Skyline that was seen heading north back towards Hastings.
A witness told Central FM the Skyline turned into River Terrace right in the path of an oncoming people mover.
Two people were taken to Hawke’s Bay Hospital as a result of the accident.
Mr Walker said it was lucky the accident happened at a reasonably low speed.
A shopper at New World Waipukurau received a surprise phone call this week to tell them they had won a $12,000 Helloworld Travel voucher.
New World owner Gerard Kennedy said the winner, who is a loyal customer of the store, recently swiped her Clubcard when purchasing a tub of Vanish brand laundry powder.
He said the winner forgot about the promotion, and initially thought she was being scammed when she got the call to say she had won.
Mr Kennedy said it’s exciting to see a local family winning big.
Additional Police staff are being brought into Hawke’s Bay following the death of gang leader Sonny Smith.
Mr Smith, national president of the Notorious Mongrel Mob chapter, passed away yesterday morning.
Police said that they were in contact with Mr Smith’s whanau around plans for his tangi.
A spokesperson said additional Police staff will be in Hawke’s Bay to ensure the safety of the community and to monitor traffic movement over the coming days.
Strong winds are expected for Central Hawke’s Bay and Tararua District over the next few days.
Metservice is forecasting westerly winds to become strong from this afternoon.
Severe gale westerlies are also expected for areas south of Waipawa tomorrow and into the early part of Sunday.

The CHB Representative Rugby team will play Wairarapa Bush for the Stu Smith Memorial Trophy on Monday (3rd) at the Eketahuna Rugby Grounds.
The game kicks off at 1pm.
