A boil water notice for the Pongaroa township has been lifted.

The Tararua District Council put the notice in place last week following heavy rain and high turbidity levels in the water.

The Council said yesterday that after satisfactory testing results, they were able to lift the notice, and it was now safe for the Pongaroa community to resume normal water use.

The quad bike stolen from the Waipukurau Racecourse early last week has been recovered.

The bike was taken in the early hours of last Monday morning when a shed at the Racecourse was broken into.

Police executed a search warrant late in the week following information from the public.

The Department of Conservation is co-ordinating with Ngati Kere after two dead pygmy whales washed ashore near Porangahau last week.

Environmental conditions had made it unsafe for DOC staff to respond at the time the whales came ashore.

It is thought weather-related conditions caused the whales to beach.
