The Magpies rugby team has lost its head coach just weeks out from the NPC beginning.

It was announced yesterday that Josh Syms has been appointed Forwards Coach of Italian Club Zebre.

Syms has been with the Magpies since being appointed forwards coach in 2018 and was promoted to Head Coach in 2021.

Hawke’s Bay Rugby CEO Jay Campbell said while they are disappointed that Josh has decided to move on, especially just out from the start of the NPC, they understand the international coaching market and that the offer was simply too compelling to turn down.

Syms said there had been so many memorable moments over the past six years and said he will miss the Bay.

Brock James has now been confirmed as the new Magpies head coach.

The Hawke’s Bay Regional Council is welcoming the Government’s announcement of a billion dollar cyclone funding recovery package, including investment in flood protection measures.

Prime Minister Chris Hipkins and Cyclone Recovery Minister Grant Robertson made the announcement yesterday in Hawke’s Bay.

Regional Council Chair Hinewai Ormsby says the funding package is critical for the region to get back on its feet, and will be a huge boost to cyclone recovery efforts.

She says the funding is a start to support the region’s resilience to major climate events.

Ms Ormsby says as well as critical infrastructure investment, there is funding for welfare, and this is incredibly important for those people impacted by the cyclone.

As part of the package, the Government is investing $100 million in co-investment with local authorities for flood protection.

Hinewai Ormsby says the funding gives an opportunity to build in a level of resilience which will provide more confidence into the future.
