Horizons Regional Council has approved more than $9 million of reserve funding to repair damage to river management assets caused by Cyclone Gabrielle.
Horizons staff have been assessing damage and meeting with affected landowners since the Cyclone struck to determine what needs addressing to reinstate protection for vulnerable communities.
Council spokesperson Dr Jon Roygard said repairs would begin this week, predominantly in the likes of Tararua District, and would take some considerable time.
He said in addition to damage repairs, Horizons has committed to an ongoing package for debris management in Tararua to reduce the damage from debris on infrastructure.
