Pongaroa farmer David Buick’s incredible comeback from an accident that left him critically injured nearly three years ago has continued with a win in the New Zealand Shearing Champs open shearing final on Saturday night.

The 45-year-old won the title by just 0.504 points, having earlier won the 2024 whanau event alongside son Michael.

Buick was crushed while digging a culvert on his Pongaroa farm in October 2021, and there were fears he would never walk again.

Yesterday Buick spoke with Jamie MacKay on The Country and said it was a long road to recovery and paid tribute to the nurses and everyone involved in his care.


The Breast Cancer Foundation’s new Pink Campervan will be in Central Hawke’s Bay again this week.

Two breast health nurses are travelling around the country on the campervan, visiting towns to educate about breast health.

The campervan will be at the New World Waipukurau carpark this Thursday.

Breast Cancer Foundation NZ Chief Executive Ah-Leen Rayner says one of the best ways lives can be saved from breast cancer is to spread knowledge about the importance of going for mammograms and being breast aware.
